TANGO – DISCIPLINED OR FREE ?

TANGO…restrained, internal, expressive or flamboyant?

Track 6 on Tango Project Loca Bohemia is ZITA  by Astor Piazzolla. A tango written for The late Anibal Troilo’s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An%C3%ADbal_Troilo wife, Zita is a perfect example of what can happen when different musicians approach the same piece.

Piazzolla  recorded most of his own tangos many times – always differently.

Unlike classical western music, in tango there is freedom of interpretation, which means the artist can deviate from the score in the search for meaningful expression.

All in tango is subordinate to expression. The more skilled the musician the more affective the interpretation. Even so, traditional values such as rhythmic accuracy and perfect tuning (intonation) can never be sacrificed in the pursuit of expression.

A combination of rhythmic momentum and vulnerable melody is the essence of this tango.
