AUSTRALIAN TANGO BANDS-Colectivo29

In the spirit of sharing the art of tango performance among colleagues, here is the first in a series profiling other ensembles which are part of the tango music scene in Australia.

Colectivo29 – A contemporary, adventurous tango quintet based in Melbourne, Australia.

Andrew James – piano,

Rachael Kim – violin,

Mischa Herman – accordion,

Penelope Witt – cello,

Tamara Murphy – bass

New arrangements of classic Tango repertoire and lesser known compositions from Argentine maestros combine to produce a post-Piazzolla, post-2001 economic crash mix of passionate and intense music. Dramatic, powerful and poetic music in the tradition of urban music from Buenos Aires.

Colectivo29 create an arresting, captivating acoustic atmosphere and feature some Australia’s finest musicians with experience studying and performing in Buenos Aires. They are currently playing around Melbourne, and promoting their album, ‘En Vivo’ recorded at Paris Cat Jazz Club. They were featured in the the Boite world music series at Box Hill Arts Centre, and play regularly at Paris Cat and Open Studio, their tango music home. They also play at various Melbourne milongas, recently at Tango Bien, Brunswick.

Pianist Andrew James also plays in a duo with bandoneonist Leonardo Intilangelo, at various Milongas and Open Studio.

Recent clips of Colectivo29 and some tracks from the album En Vivo can be viewed on Colectivo’s Youtube Channel
